Lithium Batteries for IoT Devices
IoT devices — sensors, trackers and meters that report data over wireless networks — share one power problem: they are often installed where nobody can easily change a battery, and they must run for years on a single cell. Primary lithium batteries answer that problem with long shelf life and very low self-discharge. LiSOCl2 cells are stated to hold their charge for more than 10 years at category level, with self-discharge of less than 1 percent per year, and hybrid pulse capacitor packs add a capacitor for the short, high current pulses that wireless transmission demands.
The selection logic for an IoT device starts with the transmission pattern. A sensor that wakes rarely and sends a small packet can run on a single ER cell for years. A device that transmits frequently, or at higher power, draws pulses that strain a lithium thionyl chloride cell; that is where a hybrid pulse capacitor pack earns its place, because the capacitor supplies the pulse while the cell supplies the long-term energy. Voltage, capacity, temperature range and physical size then narrow the choice to a specific model, such as ER14505 for a compact sensor or ER34615 for a large, long-life installation.
Operating temperature matters for outdoor IoT deployments. The ER series detail page states -55 to +85 degrees Celsius, and the LiSOCl2 category states -60 to 85 degrees Celsius, covering winter cold and summer heat. Before ordering, confirm the exact model, the capacity variant, the pulse requirements and the final datasheet. Minimum order value is USD $500, according to the company FAQ, and samples are available. Lead time is confirmed per order. Certificates are available upon request.
